Otitis Media
Otitis Media is the medical term for an ear infection.
There are three types of Otitis Media:
- Acute otitis media (AOM). The middle ear becomes infected and swollen and fluid builds up behind the eardrum. This causes earache and is the most common form.
- Otitis media with effusion (OME). Fluid remains in the middle ear after the ear is no longer infected. It is possible to have no symptoms with OME.
- Chronic otitis media with effusion (COME). Fluid remains in the middle ear for a long time or returns regularly despite there being no infection. COME makes it harder to fight new infections and also can affect hearing.
Otitis Media can affect anyone however it is more common in children.
