RPA celebrated the 40th anniversary of Australia's first adult cochlear implant, a groundbreaking surgery performed by Professor Bill Gibson. The event honored Prof Bill Gibson, recipient Sue Walters, and Dr. Halit Sanli, who developed key testing procedures. Sue Walters, who co-founded CICADA after receiving the implant, thanked Gibson, Dr. Sanli, and Gibson's wife, Alex, for their support. exactly how difficult it is to listen when there is background noise
around, and how much this can impact your social involvement.
Our research is looking to better understand how effectively individuals can
hear in background noise, so that we can take steps toward solving this
challenging problem.

Dr. William Martens, a perceptual psychologist with over 40 years in auditory science, focuses on hearing loss effects. His presentation delves into how cochlear implants affect music perception. Drawing from research and personal insights, he discusses challenges in grasping melody and harmony with CI. Recent studies comparing musical instrument sound quality via CI versus normal hearing will be summarised. Curtin University is conducting a study to develop a patient-centred outcome measure for adults with hearing loss, exploring their choice regarding cochlear implant use. With input from implant users and those considering it, we've created a prototype. We're now seeking survey participants to refine this measure through Rasch analysis, aiming to tailor it based on demographics like age and gender – Interested !
